Tampere, Finland – Sept. 21, 2010 – Heroes of Kalevala is a brand new match-3 and village building game created by MythPeople and published by 10tons Ltd. The game is now available for iPhone, iPod touch, Windows, Mac OS X, and iPad. Heroes of Kalevala draws inspiration from the Finnish epic poem called Kalevala.
“Our goal was to create a carefully crafted state of the art premium match-3 game with some casual strategy elements in the form of village building.”, commented Sampo Töyssy, one of the developers. “Based on the initial response the game should appeal to almost anyone who enjoys playing a well polished game. According to our own play tests, the game should offer at least 8 hours of unique content. Probably it’ll take longer for most to play through the levels. As a bonus the game also offers an unique glimpse into some interesting Finnish mythology. And yes, my name originates from Kalevala. It’s quite a common name here in Finland as there are around 3000 Sampos here.”
Heroes of Kalevala has two main ingredients: a premium quality match-3 game and a village building meta game. The match-3 game features special blocks like ice, spreading tar, lock bomb puzzles, and 8 different hero tiles. Tar and locked bombs are probably something unique to this game and they’ve been used to create unique challenges throughout the game. The game has over 140 hand made levels in total. The team wanted to create a state of the art match-3 gaming experience that improves on the great match-3 games of the past and adds a handful of new twists.
In the village building game the player can buy buildings and plants with the coins received from playing the match-3 game. Each villager needs at least one tree that produces happiness to become happy. The amount of happy villagers determines how much bonus coins the player receives after each match-3 level.
Heroes of Kalevala also tells a story of a tribe that arrives into the land of Kalevala and starts to build villages. As the game name suggests, they will meet the mythical Heroes of Kalevala who will aid them in the fight against the evil witch Louhi. The ultimate goal is to acquire a fabled device called Sampo that would produce endless wealth for the villagers. The story aims to immerse the player with hand drawn full screen graphics and voice overs.
Heroes of Kalevala was developed with the support of the MEDIA Programme of the European Community.
Heroes of Kalevala is available for the iPhone and iPod touch for $2.99. The iPad version is called Heroes of Kalevala HD which is available for $4.99. Windows and Mac OS X versions are also available.
